There’s nothing better than getting outside and getting fresh air, especially now when so much of our world seems turned upside down, and an ideal place to do that is by the water. Some of us are lucky to live where water meets the land, while the rest of us are left to dream about our next vacation or visit to see friends and family. ArchDaily explores these magical places, described as transition zones where the waters’ banks turn into dynamic and appealing public spaces. They are not only places of elemental connection, they are often gathering places for activities, recreation, and resting. Click below for 10 projects that feature promenades and waterfronts from around the world.

Doodling has long been recognized for its ability to drive our creativity and it can be argued that it’s a key component to learning. The act of doodling is said to unlock our brains so that our creative juices flow. It also allows us to think differently, which is crucial to creativity. A blank page, or in this case, a cocktail napkin, can serve as an extended playing field for the brain and improve the creative thought process. “Now in its 10th year, Architectural Record’s annual Cocktail Napkin Sketch Contest showcases the passion and skill of a diverse group of architects, designers, and students.” Click below for the winner, runner-ups, and some amusing submissions that may have you double-checking the view from your office window.
