IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

There is a new building standard to improve health and the human experience through design. Created by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), the WELL Building standard is the first rating system of its kind to focus exclusively on the impacts of buildings on human health and wellness. Although it’s a relatively new program, there are currently 3,798 projects that encompass more than 447 million square feet applying WELL across 58 countries.

There are a lot of synergies between WELL and LEED certifications, and both essentially work hand-in-hand to support environmental and human wellness. LEED is often preferred because it is understood and well known, while WELL is still in it’s infancy. Despite it’s recent start, WELL is seen as the icing on the cake for projects who can afford both certifications. Learn more about the program’s benefits and the unique opportunities it presents below.

Recommendation: Southern Exposure: The Overlooked Architecture of Chicago’s South Side
Written By: Lee Bey

Lee Bey’s new book is a notable exception to the large architectural photo books. ArchDaily describes it as an intriguing hybrid: a photo book of the South Side, a neighborhood history, a mini-memoir, and a polemic about systemic racism and historic preservation in Chicago. Bey offers a unique perspective as a lifelong resident of the South Side and also an architecture critic for the Chicago Sun Times, where he served for five years. Click below for an interview with Bey and more insights from his book.
