More designers are incorporating copper into their projects as they look toward using more sustainable and timeless materials. For those reasons, copper has become more popular in recent years for both new and restored buildings. Each year, the Copper Development Association (CDA) celebrates the best applications of the fiery metal in North America by awarding 12 innovative projects. This year’s “winning projects represent a wide variety of design styles and buildings, including residential structures, government facilities and churches – all of which were executed with remarkable detail, creativity and craftsmanship.” Featured above is a 100,000-square-foot, seven-story office building located in D.C., while you’ll find a complete list of winning projects below.

Fiber cement cladding, which is known for its natural texture and muted tones, makes for a desirable aesthetic for many commercial projects. By harnessing the material’s inherent qualities, Equitone has a long history of developing façade panels that utilize various shapes and surfaces to create something truly unique. Their newest addition, Lunara, encapsulates our fascination with space travel and reflects our fascination with what lies beyond of our own atmosphere. “The unique surface of Lunara is covered with tiny irregular elevations and depressions, reminiscent of the cratered landscape of the Moon and invites architects and planners to design visionary building envelopes.” Lunara facade panels are compatible with MillerClapperton’s System 5000, 5100, and 5200.

“Like ENR’s popular regional and national U.S. competitions, Global Best Projects identifies and honors the project teams behind outstanding design and construction efforts of the past year.” There is one difference however, that makes this competition stand out from the others, and that is the rule that “at least one firm involved in the project must be working outside its home country, and projects are partially weighted by how globally diverse those teams are.” In this 9th year of competition, there were 30 winning projects from 21 different countries on six continents that showcase the risks, rewards and hurdles overcome when designing and building internationally. A complete list of winning projects can be accessed below as well as registration for the virtual awards event, which takes place December 9th.
