#1 DESIGNING CITIES OF THE FUTURE

If you can remember back to what our major cities looked like 20 years ago, imagine how different our world will look in another 20 years.  With more than half of the world’s population already living in urban centers, that number will be closer to 60 percent by 2039.  It’s estimated that our world will be home to 43 megacities, which are urban areas with more than 10 million inhabitants.

What does good design look like in a future like this?  Most architects and urban planners agree that our cities must be places designed for people – not vehicles, buildings, or businesses.  Read how some designers are planning to address population density and what they are doing to overcome the most challenging elements of planning for the future here.

#2 ARCHITECTURE IN FILM

A recent article from ArchDaily explores how the built environment can impact how we experience and process film.  Informing both scene and setting, architecture and the built environment can have far-reaching effects on an audiences’s cinematic experience.  From indie-classics to modern remakes, more authentic storytelling is made possible by creating fictional cities or reimagining cities of the future, ultimately connecting us to the culture and characters before us.  See which recent movies were included here.

#3 ASK THE PANEL GUYS | EPISODE 3

President Zeke Miller is back this week talking about Metal Composite Material (MCM) and color selection.  You may not realize it, but color selection is one of the largest determining factors of cost when considering MCM for a project.  Learn the difference between 2-coat micas and 3-coat metallics, how to select natural metals, and what advantages there are to using standard colors.  Watch Now!

#4 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Carter G. Woodson Regional Library
The Woodson Regional Library underwent a complete building envelope replacement including a new roof, exterior walls, and windows in late 2017.  The updated building opened to the public earlier this year, which included several interior improvements in addition to the aforementioned updates.  Upgrades also include flooring, light, and fresh paint along with updated guardrails and handrails, new study rooms, and the build-out of a new childhood space.  For this project, MillerClapperton fabricated 2,500 square feet of Metal Composite Material panels that frame the entrance and l-shape of the window frames.
