IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

What makes a building great? “For many design professionals, architecture is more than the final product. It is a language, a process of creating spaces for people, and a representation of what we value as a culture.” Context also has a role to play as something good or appropriate in one context, may not work in another. Trying to define design excellence is a vast and deep exploration of ideas, but it is possible to describe it, says Marlon Blackwell, FAIA. “Good architecture is resolute. [It has] resolution in the scale of the site and the building, and in the hand or detail.”

In an article from Architect Magazine, they look more deeply at successful design and what makes architecture excellent today. Click below to read why prioritizing people, place, and purpose are considered desirable qualities for projects of all scales, typologies, and objectives.

“Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it’s enemy action.” “If the famous line from Goldfinger is to be believed, then James Bond is the enemy of Architecture. The decimation of lairs, labs, hideouts and hotels throughout the Bond movies is second to none. As an aficionado of beautiful buildings, witnessing the exquisite interiors and renowned architectural landmarks (designed by Ken Adams — the man behind most of the classic Bond sets) being reduced to rubble can induce an uncomfortable tension, regardless of the fact it’s fiction. In reality, however, it’s not 007 himself who has an aversion to modern architecture, but Bond writer Ian Fleming.” To hear more about the background story that led to the bad blood and infamous villain Goldfinger, click below.

Cooler weather is hear to stay, but some incredible art installations are not, so we recommend a visit while you can. Although many museums have reopened for inside art exhibits, the lingering pandemic has yielded increased enthusiasm for outdoor art experiences. Architect’s Newspaper has rounded up eight outdoor art experiences you can safely explore this autumn from New England’s famed Berkshires to an otherworldly experience nestled in the Ozark forest of Arkansas or the East River shoreline in Queens. If you prefer a bit of exercise and fresh air while enjoying sculptures and other works, it’s the perfect time to plan a visit before the winter chill sets in. And, if you time it right, you can take in the beautiful Fall foliage and appreciate nature’s canvas while you explore human creativity.

Recommendation: Interview with Carol Ross Barney
Interviewed By: Zach Mortice for RECORD

Architect Carol Ross Barney was recently selected for the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s 2021 National Design Award for Architecture and Interior Design. Over four decades, she has built one of the nation’s most vital practices from utilitarian public infrastructure, which is often overlooked by designers. She has long been a champion of public sector work and her vast portfolio includes train stations and chiller plants to border stations. Current events of the past few years have brought the conversation about this type of infrastructure to the forefront and what’s possible for bringing more investment to cities and towns. She spoke with Zach Mortice for RECORD about why she built her practice around the public sector and what it means to get recognition for the work she has long championed.
