The International Highrise Award is considered the world’s most important architecture award for high-rise buildings. This year’s nominees include 31 projects from 14 countries with five ultimate finalists named by Deutsches Architekurmuseum.

The award is aimed at architects and developers whose buildings are at least 100 meters high and have been completed in the past two years. Although China is the country with the most high-rise projects (with roughly every third sky-rise with a height of at least 100 meters being built there), this is the first year a project from the African continent has been nominated. Click below to see the finalists, as well as prior winners.

Predicting what the world will look like in the future is not an easy task. With global trends toward urbanization and an aging population, there are shifts that will most certainly change the way cities and buildings are designed.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named this year’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. “In the 33-year history since the making of this list, 95% of the more than 300 sites classified by the National Trust as being at imminent risk of destruction have ultimately been spared from the wrecking ball and further ruin due in part to their placement on the list and the widespread attention generated by it.” Of particular interest on the 2020 list is the Terrace Plaza Hotel in downtown Cincinnati, which was designed in the late 1940s by trailblazing architect, Natalie de Blois.
