“When designing a project, architects have plenty of options for the exterior façade. Whether brick, wood, metal, stone, concrete or something in between, what seems like an easy decision very seldom is. There are a variety of reasons why an architect chooses a specific type of façade for a project, with everything from the owner’s vision to local design ordinances playing a role. However, the bottom line on the final decision often comes down to cost.

While choosing a metal wall or roof panel may seem like a simple decision, that’s only part of the decision. There’s plenty of options to consider such as the panel type, width, length, thickness and color. With so many options possible, Metal Architecture spoke to some architects to learn what plays a role in their decision to choose a metal panel façade, and what circumstances can cause them to change the type of panel they decided on.” Project location, design, and cost all play a factor in selecting the right metal panels.

Last Fall, Mercy Hospital broke ground on a 16,000-square-foot Ambulatory and Family Care Center. The new facility will offer expanded services to the community, including primary care, cardiology, endocrinology and more. The building will also serve as the home of Mercy’s women’s and children’s services, which is currently provided within the hospital. MillerClapperton will fabricate 900 square feet of Equitone Lunara, fiber cement material for the project.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) released the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) for September. The score reports steady growth for the twentieth consecutive month. Although this month’s score of 51.7 is down from August’s 53.3, any score above 50 is indicative of growth. “Business conditions for architects remain stable for the twentieth consecutive month, despite rising inflation.” Broken down into the four regions of the U.S., the Northeast reached its highest pace of growth in September, outpacing the South, which has been the strongest region for the two prior consecutive months. “Across the broader architecture sector, backlogs at firms remained at a robust 7.0 months as of the end of September, still near record-high levels since we began collecting this data regularly more than a decade ago,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker.
