IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

The term “sustainability” was first popularized in 1987 via the Brundtland Report titled “Our Common Future”. It introduced  the notion that the sustainable use of natural resources must “meet the needs of the present generation without affecting the ability of future generations to meet theirs.”

Through its design, construction, and operation, a sustainable building must reduce or eliminate negative effects overall and may even generate net positive impacts on the climate and environment – preserving resources and improving the quality of life of the occupants simultaneously. To use the term “sustainable” is easy and even sounds appealing, but what does it really mean? The answer is anything but simple. In the last 30 years, several sustainability certifications have been created. While some certifications verify whether the building meets certain efficiency criteria, others create different classifications that receive a score based on such evaluations.
