IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

A rapid revitalization is underway in Atlanta’s Upper Westside, an area historically characterized by industrial manufacturing, warehouses, and rail lines. Anchoring this transformation is The Works, an expansive 80-acre mixed use development blending office space, residential living, retail, and dining – while preserving the district’s historical industrial character. Guided by the vision of Selig Developments and designed by Smith Dalia Architects, the completion of Phase One showcases a parking garage remarkable for its unique design and complexity. Canvassing the garage is 13,025 square feet of 3mm thick Alfrex Pre-Finished Solid Aluminum Plate from Alfrex, LLC of Buford, Georgia. Discover how MillerClapperton fabricated and installed the material, which was double coated in two custom colors, to create an intricate façade designed to harness contrasts in color, shape, depth and light for this unique project. Read the full case study below.

Recommendation: Visual Delight in Architecture
Reviewed By: Dan Weissman, Architect Magazine

You’ve likely heard the sayings, “the view is better from the top” or “the higher you go, the better the view.” While buildings can offer us the opportunity to have a protected and elevated perspective, we are enclosed in an “environment mediated by mechanical systems”, which could actually have the opposite effect. Higher floors and views are often associated with a higher economic status, but that begs the question, “who is allowed access to these views?”

These inquiries have practical and political implications, which Lisa Heschong explores in her latest book, Visual Delight in Architecture: Daylight, Vision, and View. According to Dan Weissman who reviewed the book for Architect Magazine, “Visual Delight is at home in the library of a student, emerging architect, or seasoned practitioner. Architects will learn of worthy precedents for post-occupancy research. The book may also find utility with non-architects, including stakeholders making financial or programmatic decisions for building construction or renovation…”
