This year’s International Architecture Awards celebrate 125 plus projects from over 38 nations. For the award’s 15th year, the panel of six judges selected an elite group of buildings and urban planning projects, which are being exhibited at the Contemporary Space Athens through the middle of October. Entitled “The City and the World”, it will travel in Europe through 2021. Among this year’s winners are several projects in the United States such as the Flagship McDonald’s in Chicago, the OCHSNER Center for Innovation in New Orleans, and the Statue of Liberty Museum in New York. A dual-brand hotel is coming to downtown Oakland. The project will contain both a Marriott Residence Inn and a AC Hotel. The 18-story hotel located on Jefferson St. will dedicate lower levels to the Residence Inn with a mix of studios and one-bedroom apartments, which is geared toward longer stays. The upper floors will be in the AC Hotel style, aimed at millennial customers and shorter stays with a higher level of finishes and amenities. For the project, MillerClapperton is fabricating 10,400 square feet of Metal Composite Material and 45,000 square feet of Fiber Cement panels.

With the exception of Antarctica, bees are found on all continents and all habitats that contain insect-pollinated flowering plants, but their importance is certainly not understated. More attention has been paid to bees in recent years as the threat of their extinction has become a global issue. Something that has impressed researchers however “is the organization of their hives, which are highly populated cities with an efficiency to make any urban planner envious.” When looking at the physical structure of the hives, the variety of construction is also vast.
