The Architect’s Newspaper’s 10th Best of Products Awards looks to elevate well-designed products serving the architecture and design community. Divided into 34 categories, the awards bring recognition to the manufacturers, designers, engineers and collaborations behind the trusted tools and systems that make up our built environment. Sustainability, as well as recycled content and reusable materials all proved to be common themes in the winners, and the jury was impressed by those who created scalable, circular systems or discovered ways to reduce energy and carbon. Opening in November, the Element by Westin is part of a new mixed-use hub called Campus 244 in Dunwoody, Ga. The 145-key hotel is part of the phase one development to a campus that is expected to span 1 million square feet next to Dunwoody’s MARTA statin by Perimeter Mall.

The eco-friendly hotel will feature sophisticated, environmentally sensitive interior design, with all guest suites offering kitchens, spa-inspired bathrooms and signature Heavenly Beds. Additionally, the hotel will have an indoor-outdoor lobby lounge, fitness room, The Spruce Social House, a new food-and-beverage concept, and Stäge Kitchen & Bar, a new-to-market restaurant. Bordering greenspaces and pathways, the hotel is also pup friendly.

For this project, MillerClapperton fabricated and installed 8,000 square feet of Metal Composite Material.

Buildings consume 40% of global energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency reports that 30% of this energy is wasted due to inefficiencies. A recent advancement in building operations is the adoption of digital twins, a 3-D digital representation of a physical asset, offering detailed and comprehensive understanding of building systems. Digital twins can help facilitate a smooth handover from construction to operation, greatly enhancing operational efficiency. While buildings have increasingly integrated digital systems, the integration of these systems into everyday operations has not kept pace with technological advancements.

The Burning Man event wrapped up earlier this month. The annual, week-long event takes place in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert and each year, tens of thousands of people come together to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression and self-reliance. This year’s theme was Curiouser & Curiouser, and Dezeen put together this collection of 10 large-scale installations captured by photographer Gurpreet Chawla.

Recommendation: 11 New Books on Residential Design

The editors of Architectural Record have created a list of 11 new book titles that explore residential design. These books look at sustainable strategies and building materials to historical accounts and monographs by seasoned house architects. From “The Edith Farnsworth House,” which we featured a few weeks ago, to “Houses Natural/Natural Houses,” this collection has something for everyone.
