#1 UNDERSTANDING WHICH MATERIAL CORE IS REQUIRED FOR YOUR PROJECT

Which material core is needed is not simply an architect’s personal preference (or anyone else’s for that matter). The requirement for which material core is to be used for a project is determined by the International Building Code. The two main codes to review for this determination are IBC 1407 and IBC 2603. We have made these codes available for your reading pleasure along with two whitepapers from the Metal Construction Association.

We have done all of the hard work for you and have written the requirements into the Build-A-Spec section on our website, but for your convenience, here are the highlights:

  • IBC 1407 – If MCM panels are installed above 40′-0” mean grade, then a Fire Retardant (FR) core must be used. There are a few exceptions, and they are listed in the code and in the generated specification.
  • IBC 2603 – If MCM panels are installed as part of an assembly that includes Plastic Insulation (a.k.a. rigid insulation), then a Fire Retardant (FR) core must be used. This code section states that the assembly must have passed an NFPA 285 test, and there is no known successful NFPA 285 tests where a Polyethylene (PE) core has been used.

#2 SOCIAL MEDIA FOR METAL BUILDINGS

“Things have changed a lot in the past three decades when it comes to technology. As impressive as fax machines were at that time . . . by today’s standard they’re quaint at best compared to email attachments and cloud-sharing services.”

In his latest column over at DesignandBuildwithMetal.com, Shawn Zuver explores the drastic changes in our technology over the past three decades, and the effects this has on the metal industry. .
