Like many of you, I’ve been following the data center market, and lately I’ve had a hard time figuring out whether things are slowing down or speeding up.
Projects are being delayed by power availability, permitting, financing, and community resistance. Some sit for months. Some may never get built.
That alone makes planning difficult.
Which projects are real? Which ones should we actually be preparing for? And when are they really going to happen?
Then a project finally gets the power, permits, financing, and approvals it needs, and the conversation seems to change overnight.
How fast can we build it?
That is the part I find frustrating.
The time lost getting a project ready and/or approved doesn’t necessarily get added back to the construction schedule. Months can disappear on the front end, and then the people responsible for actually building it are expected to jump through hoops, compress schedules, solve every problem, and somehow make up the difference.
I understand the urgency. If capacity is needed, everyone wants the facility operating as soon as possible.
But at some point, speed creates risk too. Right?
Maybe that is why this market is so difficult to read right now.
Projects seem to be taking longer to become real.
Then, once they are real, we’re expected to build them faster than ever.
